I never really believed Itachi to be evil. Back in early 2008, I also suspected that he was a little too "nice" by not killing anyone when he had so many chances to kill. Finally, in his battle with Sasuke, I also thought it seemed that he was purposefully going easy on him, or at least not with the intent to kill. During that fight, I definitely knew he'd be a good guy in the end. I was very happy that my suspicions were confirmed and Itachi-san's beautiful legacy still lives on in the words of Naruto and Sasuke in the latest chapters <3

If people say no... then they lack the ability to analyze a character and look at things deeper than the surface. Kishimoto knew since Itachi's inception that he would be good.

Hints in part one:
-Sasuke mentioned him crying.
-He consistently complimented Kakashi and Kurenai.
-He had the option to slice through Kurenai, but refrained from doing so... he just kicked her away.
-He didn't tell Kisame to chop Naruto's legs off.
-He flinched when he was at the cafe and Kakashi mentioned Sasuke's name.
-He used Tsukiyomi on Kakashi. Regular sharingan genjutsu doesn't work on others with the sharingan. It was the only genjutsu that would incapacitate him. Kakashi even pointed out that Itachi could just save the trouble and kill him, but Itachi has no desire to.
-His lie to Kisame about how he, himself, and other Akatsuki members would be beat by Jiraiya. Lol
-His entire composure. He wasn't some barbarian... he was very polite.
-Kishimoto dedicated several chapters in part one to showing that Itachi at one point was a gentle, genuine brother. That would be pointless if he wasn't a good guy. People don't just snap in a few hours when they're normal and kill everyone.
-Fugaku and Itachi were shown talking in part one. Fugaku was nervous and angry... he stated "Don't you know your place and your mission?!"
-Itachi mentioned the clan repeatedly in part one... so much that it was obvious he cared for how people viewed them and their actions.
-In the first databook, it stated he only ever went on one S-Rank mission.
-In the second databook (also released during part one), it said that he was merciful and polite.

So many things were pointing to him being a good guy, it's ridiculous. Literally every appearance he had gave more hints. Kishimoto succeeded with this plot twist. U_U

And in response to all of this:
nah kishi himself didn't even know he was gonna make itachi good when he first appeared. itachis personality change from part 1 to part 2 makes that clear. in part 1 he was just a mean guy. he belittled his seniors and called their jutsu weak while in part 2 he started praising people on their jutsu skills.

also kisame said itachi overusing his eyes was bad and he had already cast tsukyiomi on kakashi and his maximum usage of MS is 3 jutsu and he's done so with one use depleted i doubt a (back then evil itachi) wanted to risk fighting more incoming jonin and anbu even if kisame was with him
The first paragraph is wrong. Kishimoto knew. And in part one and two, the personalities are the same. The only difference is that in part two, his facial expression is less stern... that's literally all. He didn't call their jutsu weak in part one, he complimented them on it.

With Itachi's and Kisame's powers, they could have offed Kakashi, Kurena, and Asuma quite easily. No one would come, since the three would have dead and therefore other shinobi would not hear the commotion. The fact that they left seemed odd and only works in favor of the reveal.

This right here ^ a wholehartedly agree. U_U
It's incorrect. U_U :p

he was not a good guy in part 1 at all. he became kishis fave character so he made him good so he dont look bad.
He was good.

And he's not Kishimoto's fave. That would be Sasuke, mainly.

i expected something to be going on cause he killed his own clan but i was certain he wasnt good because. even though he couldve just used tsukuyomi to knock out kakashi he didnt he instead mind raped him for 3 days. even though he couldve had himself and kisame use a simple transformation jutsu so they wont look suspicious he didnt. made sasuke watch his parents and entire family die... twice. tried to kidnap naruto. was going to let kisame cut off narutos legs.
-The Tsukiyomi lasted 72 hours in order to knock out Kakashi. Nothing less would work since Kakashi was slightly immune to sharingan. This shows that Itachi is good, Kakashi even admitted that it was odd since he held back and didn't kill him.

-Why use a transformation jutsu when they're an S-rank criminal organization and supposed to be proud of that. He's blow his cover if he'd suggest that to Kisame.

-The first time made Sasuke more powerful due to causing him to awaken his first tomoe. The second time incapacitated him so they could leave.

-He made no sincere effort to kidnap Naruto and Itachi knew Jiraiya was coming because he sensed that the genjutsu he placed on that lady had been broken, hence why he didn't answer when Kisame asked to chop off Naruto's legs... he knew he wouldn't be able to anyway.

Nothing there makes him a bad guy. More like the opposite. Lol

Him being a Good guy?

No, most people are using hindsight powers if they say yes. I, like others, I'm sure, did think there was more going on, After their run in the village with Kakashi and Guy, I knew he was a particular type of enemy. Much like Reuben from FF4.
The amount of people predicting he was a good guy, even upon his inception in 2002 was outrageous. You can find all kinds of theory threads predicting it, several years before the reveal in 2008.

Also, in early 2008, before the start of the Sasuke vs Itachi fight, people on NB had a vote as to whether Itachi was evil or not. Over 70% of the base believed he was good even before the truth was revealed.

I had no idea. I watched the entire part one of Naruto. But instead of watching Shippuden, I played Ninja Storm 2 instead back when it first came out. I learned about Itachi through Ninja Storm's 2 awesome cinematic and boss gameplay. And to say the least, I was IN OMG NOW WAY WTF mode.

But then I caught up in the anime, and then jumped ahead in the manga.
