Have you noticed that the main characters

Always have generic, non-elemental signature jutsus/techniques/abilities?

Naruto- Kage Bunshin, Rasengan (up until wind element, even though it's not his signature)

Goku- Kamehameha, Spirit Bomb, both generic

Sora- Generic Keyblade smashing

One-Piece- Stretchy

Solid Snake- CQC, Guns

Any others you can think of?

There isn't anything spectacular about them, like a pheonix fire jutsu or Xaldin's wind spears.

Some main characters have unique powers like Lelouch,Light Yagami, and many others I can't think of at the moment.

And how the genius rival has all the variety and cool moves.

Main character aren't really suppose to be all that complex. And more intriguing abilities are usually given to villains or other characters to sort of show this "mountain" that the main character has to climb along his/her journey.
