I think he just has a natural sage mode, since his body is capable of handling nature energy with ease.

Hashirama is literally the living reicarnation of the god tree IMO. His body is literally a source of life, and the properties of his mokuton are exactly the same as the god tree.(just a slightly weaker scale) The fact that the god tree is made of nature energy and passively absorbs it, implies hashiramas body can naturally do it. So no, I don't think it's a slug sage mode.

Hashirama's body doesn't naturally absorb nature energy. I think what the great sennin Pa said about senjutsu chakra applies to all SMs. I mean Hashirama at some point in his life trained to attain SM. SM is like MS in Uchiha not every Uchiha can get MS and also not every Senju can use SM. One actually trains for it and Hashi enters SM just as how Naruto, Jiraiya and Minato do.. absorb it.

His SM is different than others. It's related to his KKG technique. You can say it's an upgrade to his Mokuton technique. Considering there are no other Mokuton SM users it will remain a mystery until the end. At most i can guess that he learnt it all by himself w/o any teacher.
