Its said he died during a war. This can be true but how? He has unparalleled strength and regeneration. My theory is simple. After surviving the valley of the end fight madara used hashiramas cells to regenerate and survive. As he collected himself he snuck underground spying like zetsu which also has hashis DNA.
Once he found hashirama weakened and tired after defeating his opponents in a forest madara used a transformation technique to look like another ninja and then used tsukuyomi on unsuspecting hashirama which traumatized his mind, making the memory become suppressed and forgetting it, and putting him in a coma.
After he was put in a coma madara used a high powered fire jutsu to burn the forest down with unconscious hashirama in it. Before this hashirama told tobirama if anything happened to him tobirama will become the hokage.
