Hashirama Senju's Sage Mode:

Knowledge of Sage Mode/Senjutsu:
Sage Mode is the result of using natural energy along with a shinobi's normal chakra to drastically empower all their abilities.

Senjutsu practitioners learn to draw the energy of nature inside of them, blending it with their own chakra (created from spiritual and physical energy within the shinobi). This adds a new dimension of power to the sage's chakra, resulting in the creation of "senjutsu chakra". This chakra cannot be seen by anyone other than those who have been trained in senjutsu. This new chakra enables the user to enter an empowered state called Sage Mode, which can then drastically increase the strength of all ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu. A person who is able to use senjutsu is called a sage. Currently, there are two known ways to learn senjutsu: One being to learn from the toads of Mount Myōboku as Jiraiya and Naruto have done, and the other from the snakes from the Ryūchi Cave where Orochimaru and Kabuto Yakushi learned it. The cursed seals that Orochimaru has used in the series also use senjutsu chakra.

A third form of senjutsu is also known, used by Hashirama Senju. Unlike previous methods, Hashirama doesn't display any animal traits. It is unknown where he obtained his senjutsu style. A prerequisite to being able to use senjutsu is that the user must have a very large reservoir of chakra themselves in order to manipulate the natural energy.

Hashirama:

Hashirama Nature Elements Consists of Water, and Earth which together form the Kekkai Genkai element Wood Style. there is nobody able to use this style other then Madara, Obito, Orochimaru, Zetsu, Yamato, Danzo do to them transplanting Hashirama's DNA into themselves. giving them the power of Wood Style.

this is important because his Sage Mode allows him to use the Wood Style.

After entering Sage Mode, Hashirama creates a wooden statue of titanic proportions, easily able to dwarf a tailed beast like Kurama. Thousands of hands emanate from the statue's back in countless concentric rows, while its two main hands are clasped as if in prayer. The statue can serve a variety of purposes in battle from fighting on Hashirama's behalf, to defending and even using other techniques with it.

This technique seems to be influenced by the Buddhist bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteśvara, also known as "Senju Kannon"

One prominent story tells of Kannon vowing never to rest until he had freed all beings from Saṃsāra. After strenuous effort, but struggling to comprehend the needs of so many who still had yet to be saved, his head splits into eleven pieces. The Buddha Amida, seeing his plight, gives him eleven heads with which to hear the cries of the suffering. Upon hearing and comprehending these cries, Kannon attempted to reach out to all those who needed aid, but found that his two arms shattered into pieces. Once more, Amida comes to his aid and grants him a thousand arms with which to aid the suffering.

his Sage Mode is pretty much based on the Bodhisattva:

The bodhisattva vow is the commitment to put others before oneself. It is a statement of willingness to give up one’s own well-being, even one’s own enlightenment, for the sake of others. And a bodhisattva is simply a person who lives in the spirit of that vow, perfecting the qualities known as the six paramitas [perfections]—generosity, discipline, patience, exertion, meditation, and transcendental knowledge—in his effort to liberate beings.

This technique seems to be based upon Ryūtōki a creature from Japanese folklore, who is typically depicted as a small oni with a dragon coiled around its torso. Together with Tentōki the pair symbolise the power of the Shitennō to repel and defeat evil.

The Buddhist monk Kōben sculpted notable wooden statues of both Tentōki and Ryūtōki, which are each considered a National Treasure of Japan.

its been Stated in the Data books that His hobbies were bonsai and wood sculpting.

Bonsai Trees.

and wood Sculpting.

which includes Earth (Clay), Water (soften/harden clay) and then you have together the Wood Style.
If you have watched the Karate Kid with Mr. Miyagi you would understand about the Bonsai Trees and Sculpting

what i'm trying to get at is are thiese:

1. His Sage Mode is not Slugs.
a. He has no Animal Summonings. his Sage mode has no Animal Traits like that of Naruto and Kabuto's Sage Mode. (eyes)

2. In this mode he gains markings around and under his eyes as well as one in the middle of his forehead reminiscent of a third eye.

The third eye (also known as the inner eye) is a mystical and esoteric concept referring to a speculative invisible eye which provides perception beyond ordinary sight. In certain dharmic spiritual traditions such as Hinduism, the third eye refers to the ajna, or brow, chakra. In Theosophy it is related to the pineal gland. The third eye refers to the gate that leads to inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness. In New Age spirituality, the third eye often symbolizes a state of enlightenment or the evocation of mental images having deeply personal spiritual or psychological significance. The third eye is often associated with religious visions, clairvoyance, the ability to observe chakras and auras, precognition, and out-of-body experiences. People who are claimed to have the capacity to utilize their third eyes are sometimes known as seers.

what does this mean:

Hashirama can also perform Sage Art: Gate of the Great God

The third eye refers to the gate that leads to inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness

It is an ideal rooting from the belief of the Senju clan ancestor that love is the key to peace. It would eventually become the life philosophy which Hashirama and the Senju clan lived by, which has since been passed on to many ninja from Konohagakure as a part of their spiritual heritage.

which is basically pointing out that Hashirama's Sage Mode is a Religious Sage Mode.

i still can't tell you how he got it as in the place. but from what i understand he could have gave up his own well being to earn his Sage Mode to protect everyone.

the bodhisattva vow is the commitment to put others before oneself. It is a statement of willingness to give up one’s own well-being, even one’s own enlightenment, for the sake of others

which in my opinion meaning he does not have Slug Sage Mode.

Sage Modes:

Toad Sage Mode: Perfect Naruto, Imperfect Jaraiya
Snake Sage Mode: Imperfect Kabuto (not sure if he was perfect Sage mode)
Dragon Sage Mode: Imperfect Kabuto (using juugo's DNA bypassing this one weakness and metaphorically proclaimed that he transcended from snake to dragon.)

Religious Sage Mode: Perfect Hashirama

the main reason i believe its a Religious Sage Mode: Not an Animal Traits, its a Spiritual/Human Trait.

Hope you enjoy. if you don't like it don't comment. if agree please comment and such. Criticism will be allowed. (if only you disagree, and have proof)

Thank you. *bows and disappears in a scroll*

Nice Theory, but maybe it is the Slug because I have noted that the slug has many similarities with the Buddha.
i don't believe so. i Believe Hashirama is meant to be the 2nd or 3rd Religious being in the Narutoverse. with this proof there are 3 Gods of Shinobi 1. the original Sage. 2. Hashirama and 3. Hiruzen Sarutobi

for more info
i got most of my info from there.

Nice! Some interesting research you've done.
thank you,
i am actually missing a piece of information. i don't know what happened to it. i might not have put it on my notes while looking at others. but it was suppose to be part of the bonsai tree and the sculpting part. something referring to one of the gods.
