Hashirama Senju was considered by both Madara Uchiha and several Konoha Jōnin as the most powerful ninja of his time. He was greatly respected by every shinobi during his life, such that Madara claimed Hashirama was the one person whom he respected the most as well as detested. He knew how to perform a great number of techniques and was otherwise knowledgeable of those he could not, as indicated by creating the Scroll of Seals and his familiarity with Summoning: Impure World Resurrection. In the manga he uses a genjutsu against Hiruzen that covers the area in darkness. However, in the anime, it was shown that his brother Tobirama Senju used this genjutsu instead. During his battle with Madara, Hashirama is seen with a variety of weapons that he summoned from a large scroll.
His prowess and abilities were so great that he was able to not only fight on equal footing with Madara despite the power of his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and having the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox at his side, but also survive the battle and gain victory in the end. The injuries which he caused to Madara were so great that even decades later they still affect him tremendously.

He was most famous for his Wood Release technique, a kekkei genkai to mix earth and water-natured chakra to create this new element. By converting chakra into the source of life, he was able to create trees, causing them to grow to great sizes and manipulate them to diverse shapes and battle uses at will. It was said that this ability was used to create the very landscape and foundation that Konoha is built on. This ability was apparently unique for him, since none of his relatives were shown using the ability. Even Yamato, the only person to have proved compatible with Hashirama's genes, found his use of Wood Release to be much weaker in raw power. Yamato has also shown great skill in standard water and earth techniques, so it is presumed Hashirama could do water and earth techniques as well.
The ability Orochimaru most highly praised him for was his unique ability to control tailed beasts. Of all his considerable talents, it was this ability in particular that made Hashirama unparalleled in the shinobi world, so much so that he is regarded as one of the few people capable of completely controlling a tailed beast.[3] At one time, he had many of the beasts in his possession. This ability was greatly amplified by his crystal necklace, which Yamato suggested was a requirement to control even Naruto's partial lapses into tailed forms.

Wood Release (木遁, Mokuton; English TV "Wood Style") is an advanced nature kekkei genkai that combines earth- and water-based chakra to create wood and/or living trees. Wood Release techniques can be produced from anywhere, including the user's body, as the user's chakra is literally converted into a source of life. Wood Release is commonly affiliated with the Snake seal. The technique which consists on manipulating wood is called Wood Release Technique (木遁の術, Mokuton no Jutsu).
Hashirama Senju was the originator of this ability, evidenced by the fact that no other member of his clan were known to possess this ability. His ability to use these techniques was one of the reasons for him being given the title of the First Hokage, and with Wood Release Secret Technique: Nativity of a World of Trees he was able to grow the trees that served as the foundation of Konohagakure. This technique allowed him to completely reshape the battlefield to his advantage.

Orochimaru, in his quest to harvest the First Hokage's abilities, injected his DNA into sixty test subjects, and out of the sixty only Yamato survived. This gave Yamato the Wood Release abilities. However, he is not as masterful as the First. Orochimaru also performed a similar procedure on Danzō Shimura by implanting the First's cells in his right arm. While Danzō is capable of using this power at a similar level to Yamato, it appears Danzō's version is much cruder and causes a much more significant drain of chakra with each usage, causing Danzō to avoid using it whenever possible. As stated by Madara Uchiha, the First's powers are not so easy to control, and that when Danzō was on the verge of death, the cells in his arm went berserk, trying to swallow him whole by converting him into a tree. White Zetsu was also created from the First's cells and as such, he can also use this element.

A related technique is the Hokage-Style Sixty-Year-Old Technique - Kakuan Entering Society with Bliss-Bringing Hands. This technique produces a seal "sit" (座) on the user's right hand that can suppress a tailed beast's influence over its host. This is done by producing wooden dragons from the ground that attach to the host and force the tailed beast's chakra to recede. Hashirama's necklace aided in this technique's execution, but its exact purpose was unclear. After Naruto destroyed the necklace, Yamato implied that he could no longer suppress the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's influence.[1] However, later during Naruto's training to control the Nine-Tails', when he was transforming, Yamato stated that he would try nonetheless,[2] though his ability alone was ineffective.

Theory Hashirama can do everthing zetsu can like Merge with the ground and also transport buy moving in the ground maybe as well.... its a stretch but any person He touches he can gain there chakra and use their abilties (FARFETCHED THEORY)

The Scroll of Seals (封印の書, Fūin no Sho) is a scroll containing many kinjutsu, starting with the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique. Because of the dangerous techniques it contains, the scroll was sealed away by the First Hokage.
After failing his graduation exam, Naruto Uzumaki was tricked by Mizuki into stealing the scroll from the Hokage Residence, stating that if Naruto can learn one technique within it, he would be allowed to graduate (which did turn out to be true). In the manga, Mizuki stated that he wanted the scroll for himself for power, but in the anime extension arc, it is revealed that he intended to give the scroll to his master, Orochimaru.

I`m still a bit skeptic about Hasirama`s abilities. I don`t trust him as being such as skilled ninja because of Orochimaru`s summoning..Sarutobi easily defeated 2 Hokages, and that sort of gives us a clue of his style.. there isn`t such at least until Kishi deveops further the story. We can speculate much, but is there a reason to state he`s greater than the nijas seen today?

your using an edo tensei to gage how strong some is?

Kabuto told diedari that he doesnt understand how his clay works and let him do what he wishes and luckly for kabuito dideai seemed to hate everyone and did mind fighting against his prior peers etc. So after all we have seen with edo tensei you can clearly conclude that how well the summon fights is a reflectiion of how well the summoner is versed in the summon's techniques if the summon refues to fight and the summoner needs to take full control.

And the two/1st hokage fight clealy has more show of their powers, for example minato told us the 2nd hokage was skilled in time-space jutsu yet orochimaru did make the 2nd use any.

The 1st also clearly has far more to us after we found out he tanked a 2v 1 with madsara and the fox.

I don`t think so

I really can understand why you think what you think, but the reason why Hashirama didn't go completely balls out against Hiruzen was simply because of the story. The stage was already set for Orochimaru to kill Hiruzen for the sake of the story, and summoning Hashirama and Tobirama was more of a psychological tactic against Hiruzen more than anything.

Granted, we should have seen more from the previous 2 Hokages, but if Hashirama gave it his all with Wood Release, his secret scroll, and Tobirama with his time-space jutsus, then the fight wouldn't have turned out as it should have.

However, we do in fact have reason to believe Hashirama was as great as everyone says. Why? Because: Hashirama alone defeated Madara with his Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan, and the Kyuubi. At that time Madara was the strongest Uchiha in history. A genius of geniuses with the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan. On top of that he had the Kyuubi fighting by his side. Even after 80+ years Madara is still burdened by the damage he took from his battle with Hashirama. If that doesn't say Hashirama was powerful as sources say then I don't know what does.
