Madara and Hashirama were about 20-25 years old when Konoha was established

Hiruzen was roughly in his 60s which means Hashirama wasn't hokage for more than 5-7 years

Hashirama was about 30 years old when he died. And since it wasn't due to old age, it means he was killed

it is unlikely that it was in a war unless there was someone as powerful as Madara present

having strong jutsu/being stronger is different from having a HUGE chakra pool. third raikage had an extremely durable body while hashirama in the same position would have needed his healing jutsu which still requires chakra. so -tobiramas- made a valid point. *_*

Exactly. It would not be unusual at all for him to do something like that character-wise, and it would create an actual realistic death for a man of his caliber. Like people have stated above, his power is simply too great for him to be taken down by some nameless shinobi.

Hashirama didn't know about Tobirama's Uchiha persecution literally shown in that panel which means Hashirama was dead during Tobirama's reign.

Tobirama and Hashirama are around the same age and Tobirama still died young.

edo madara is an ENHANCED version (with hashi's power). hashirama is summoned in his prime but edo madara is just a freak (a mixture of two characters).

Hiruzen became hokage as a teen, which is when Tobirama died(who was still young)

Hiruzen also knew Hashirama as a boy, which means he was already dead by the time Hiruzen was a teen.

I convey this with scans in my earlier comment. So unless Kishi has some serious plot discrepancies, Hashirama was died young.
