Hashirama never fought juubito directly he only engaged him with a clone. Also juubito> 8 gate gai' because unlike Godara who was playing around not using any serious jutsu juubito would have blasted gai with juubidama or and exploding tsb.

In an actual fight Gai doesn't automatically have 8th gate on..... Its a state that he has to get into. And before he can get into it, Hashirama can easily hide and avoid the 8th gate.. or kill Gai or negate his things..
