Madara is going to awaken the rinnegan.
Each evolution of sharingan is trauma-related, right?
Madara getting slapped 1000 times by the big summoning is gonna push Madara to the brink of death and that is how Madara is able to awaken the rinnegan. Unfortunately getting slapped that many times, also made him that old cripple we saw in the Obito flashbacks.
But Madara knew that Hashirama was the only one that could cause him the trauma he needed to awaken the rinnegan.
***Clarification...we know Madara got Hashirama's DNA, but we don't know how. Maybe Madara gets a piece of him while he is getting his butt handed to him by the 1000 hands slap and it all happens that quickly? We saw how Sasuke was saved by having his lapdog merge his own flesh with that of Sasuke. How do we know Madara can't do it that quickly too?
