It was impractical to used the wood jutsu for 24/7 for the rest of His life to contain Kurama and defend the village. Hashirama is Human and Humans need sleep rest and food to recoup strength and Chakra. Kurama regenerates chakra faster than a human can. Common sense tells you its better to seal an all powerful beast than to constantly used up chakra to restrain Him on a 24/7 365 days a year.
