Why did Itachi have to sacrifice himself, there are plenty of ways he could have achieved the same thing without having too die.

Itachi couldn't keep going at the end of that fight, and plenty of other people would've put up a better fight than sasuke = Itachi dies from exhaustion and he's instantly recognized as a feeble shinobi that only had 1 thing going for him, not skill, something he was lucky enough to be born with, the Sharingan.

He sacrificed himself because he loved his brother, manga shows this many times, also he could have killed sasuke through his genjutsu or by piercing sasuke with totsuka or amaterasu or izanami or KA or shrunken attack with yata defense. POWWWW!!!! Sasuke eat that s**t
