It was never confirm how he did it. Maybe in some type on connection with Gezo or something, who knows.

Anything Madara enounter with Hashirama, he can used as the Sharingan copies ninjutsus. All he needs is his DNA, which he has, and Hashirama Senjutsu, to use his Sage art.
