I know why Hagoromo looks ugly compared to his twin brother Hamura. BZ said Hagoromo and Madara were the only two to awaken the Rinnegan. This means Hagoromo had to awaken his Rinnegan in order to reach Hamura's level. So Hamura had to beat him up so bad, messing up his face in the process, in order to help him awaken his power.
