But I agree with OP on the grounds that Indra is a terrible choice. That way will never bring unity, it only breeds hatred and contempt.

There will always be people like Hitler and Ayman al-Zawahiri. People who hate for no reason other than physical or because of ideals. No amount of rainbows and sparkles will change these people.

Actually at first Hagoromo gave more attention to Indra as he had eye powers so he assumed he could be better. He also seemed to neglect Ashura a little because he had no eye power so he was no good. But time proved that Ashura was very worthy as he had united people through the power of love and even though Indra had eye powers he seemed that he wanted to unite the people even if he had to use forceful methods which was not what Hagoromo wanted and also considering he spent his childhood under the care of an opressive mother. He didn't want another oppresive figure in history. So it seemed natural to select Ashura. Although he should not have selected and let them both lead the way. Since there is power in love. Plus they can both balance each other out one being a little tough and realist at times and the other softening life and causing to uplift at other times.

In my opinion peace is something unnecessary, we don't need it, this is how this world is, a world of war and strife, peace can never be achieved anyway
