amaterasu was influenced by japanese mythology
the ancient Japanese myth and religion of Shintō, Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susanoo are all gods. When Izanagi washed his face after escaping the underworld his left eye became the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu.

tsukuyomi is influenced by japanese mythology
the ancient Japanese myth of Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susanoo, where when Izanagi washed his face after escaping the underworld his right eye became Tsukuyomi, the Moon god. Interestingly, as Tsukuyomi is the Moon, he is also associated with the passing of time, and at times cited to be the God of Time (or at least of the calendar), fitting the genjutsu's ability to alter the perception of the passing of time.
this image shows the sage with a rinnegan symbol behind him, the sun behind asura, and the moon behind indra

and in this scan it shows the sage with two staffs one looking like a moon and one like a sun and the rinnegan symbol on his forehead but he also has both his rinnegans

Madara has the rinnegan in his right eye so his staff is shaped like a moon

and obito has the left eye so his staff is shaped like the sun

there staffs are both on opposite hands
you need tsukuyomi and amaterasu to awaken susano'o
The Susanoo is the third ability granted by the Mangekyō Sharingan to those who awaken the abilities Tsukuyomi — which symbolises the "Spiritual World and Darkness" and Amaterasu — which denotes the "Material World and Light".
hagoromo represents susano'o because he has both rinnegans which makes him have both the "sun staff"and "moon staff"
obito represents amaterasu becasue he had the left eye rinnegan which made him have the "sun staff"
madara represents tsukuyomi because he had the right eye rinnegan which made him have the moon staff
this picture behind itachi also has a rinnegan on it's forehead

Someone else made this same thread with the same exact ideas. I think you stole this

You were accurate and comprehensive when you related moon and sun with staff. Excellent observation.
I think it is also related to Yin-Yang. Don't forget moon represents Yin and sun represents Yang. Madara has only moon as he had only Yin part of Juubi, I.e. Gado Mazo was with Obito.
About Obito he had Yang dominance as he lacked complete Kurama.

Interesting, I find this really neat. So the Sage divided his power into 2, light and darkness. Yin and Yang, essentially like the shinto myth.

One issue though- shouldn't the Sage represent Izanagi in this case, since from his eyes Amaterasu and Tsukyomi were born? Obito originally said Izanagi was the power of the Sage to sculpt reality, or something like that so it would still fit.

Another- I don't believe Madara has amaterasu yet he has Susano'o.

Regardless I would like to hear your conclusion on what it means if Hagoromo represents this god or these gods.

They're also all Uchiha abilities, maybe it hints Indra had the purer genes, hence he inherited the eyes and the eyes have been the unofficial mark of the Sage since Pain.

So if Madara gets the other rinnegan, will his staff become a double ended one like Hagoromos?
