Madara probably didn't know how to deal with that sort of attack. After all it's not made of chakra, and he could see that with his sharingan/rinnengan, so it was easier to let the susano defend it and see what happened, since he couldn't absorb it, also this is probably the reason that Gai waited so long before starting to use "jutsu" . But it was awesome yeah.
