It's not an attack that's designed to be able to bust mountains. Size =/= strength. Any of EE's Steps are stronger than all of Shinsuusenju's punches combined. Look at the crater EE created, look at the crater Shinsuusenju created. Lemme reassert, size =/= strength.
The 7th gate would be a tough go for Hashirama. The 8th gate would unquestionably overwhelm him. Hashirama relies on large-scale techniques too extensively. Gai's gates grant him speed and power that are able to harm even the juubi's jinchuuriki. Hashirama has his healing factor, yes, but I doubt it exceeds current Madara's own. Hashirama is indeed a great ninja, but sometimes he is a bit overrated.

Hashirama uses Mayfly and hides. Gai dies fighting the rest of the clones using the 8 gates. I think we can all agree on this. I cannot see Gai wining against Hashirama, when Juubi Jin Madara is hardly retorting. He retorted once and broke his bones.
If Hashirama starts in Sage mode, he wins. Senju have excellent stamina and healing power. Hashirama will make thousands of wood clones and distract Gai until Gai is dead
