and it was never mentioned that the speed of his sand increased

so it's obvious that Gai is just too fast for him

Garra stopped amateratsu, his defence has gotten better

amaterasu works in a totally different way than chidori etc
it doesn't have great destructive capability only the ability to one-shot anything

the reason why Gaara was able to defend was that he could divide his sand into several partitions which made amaterasu useless since it couldn't spread after hitting a partition however Hirudora works in a totally different way since it doesn't stop when it hits something also Gai is faster than ms Sasuke so he could just get around the partitions and attack Gaara's absolute defense directly...

2 he hasn't shown any feat on which we could base that it got faster
3 please don't say "amaterasu" because it was enton

Gaara isn't just able to control more sand but his sand is also faster = theory
