Gai have always shown more relevancy than Sakura even before this chapter.
In term of what? Sakura character has far more relevancy to the story than Gai's, no matter how poorly written she is.Gai has moments in the manga where he is needed to advance the story, Sakura character is integrate to the story.Case in point, naruto would be a corpse right now without her character, and would have been a corpse long ago.
Gai is actually more relevant to the plot than sakura-which is quite sad. He is actually connected to Obito(one of the main villains) Sakura OTOH, has zero direct connections to any of the villains, and is in general not a well written character by kishimoto.
Knowing Obito is meaningless and not something that gives Gai any edge over Sakura in term of relevancy.Gai knew nothing of Obito's jutsus, fighting style, or even personal characteristic before the war so his connection to Obito serves no purpose.And having a connection to a villain is also meaningless unless it adds something of significance to the story.Personally, i like it best when characters aren't connect by nonsense such as fate,family,past dealings, and such.I feel mangas like Naruto and One Piece for example, overuse those things to the point where they seem corny and redundant.This past manga only made me dislike the concept more.It's like no character has his own individuality and they are all just copies of someone who lived before them.
