Pretty good explanation. It definitely seems more alone the lines of a shock-wave being produced as Gai is moving at high speed, causing the pressure waves to collide violently.

This explains the bended staff, Madara has and bending air does not make it sense and isn't that impressive really. He already created fire by punching the air really hard and took out large scale suiton. Bending space, even in small porptions is cooler.
