Are the gudodama similar to Gaara's sand in that they are an automatic defense but are also able to be controlled by the owner or do they only do what said owner tells them to do?

I think the user does, but for Naruto since he's got part off all the tailed beasts inside of him they might be able to control them too.

Maybe they only float by themselves.
The user has to guide them. ​

for the most part i think they have to be manually controlled. they most likely float and follow on their own though. but they seem like that are really easy to minipulate, only having to think of what you want them to be.
