I just watched Guardians of the Galaxy again and I came up with a theory about Peter's father and his mother's death.
Now in the comic itself (spoilers ahead) Peter's father is actually of alien race (revealed at the end of the movie) and his mother was killed by aliens when Peter was young, as opposed to dying of cancer. In both iterations, the father leaves before Peter is born. In the comics, he's referred to as being 'angelic'. It should be noted, however, that the movie is planning to stray from the canon material.
I find it odd that I just now thought of the following theory, but here it is. Is it simply coincidence that Peter's mother has a relationship with an alien being and suddenly dies of cancer about a decade later? I think not. Think about Superman for a moment. If I recall, in the comics he's actually responsible for giving several people cancer. Each of which he closely interacted with over a span of time. Given the timeline in the movie, his mother dying of cancer about 10-12 years after contact with the alien man lines up pretty nicely with the theoretical incubation time of the cancer.
