I never seemed to pay notice of Itachi but after looking at some episodes, he is the very wise man of Naruto. He knows he was set the mission to kill all the uciha. In this episode flashback:
Naruto Shippuden episode 135: The longest moment Sasuke vs Itachi
He is pretty much saying, 'Why can't the uciha look beyond their clan, their pride. If they could they could find out their potencial and be one with the village, such a cool deep guy. What Sasuke was thinking before meeting the 4 Hokage's, that's pretty much the same thing as Itachi. What is a shinobi, what is a clan, what is a village. Itachi even mentions, "True change cannot be made by laws, limitations, predictions or imagination". Something which Sasuke has said about changing the System.
I know I might be saying stuff here and there but I think It will be interested how far Sasuke might go in Itachi's shoes?
