By hype you'd have to throw a bunch of people out there - Elvis, Freddie Mercury, Billy Joel, Elton John, John Lennon, Paul McCartney.
If I was saying my favorite, not necessarily the best, it would be Trombone Shorty (Troy Andrews). I was at this concert -

That was a joke, but in all serious i have no idea, its all a matter of your perspective, and what you think a greatest artist should be. Personally my favorite artists are Damon Albarn (Gorillaz), Thomas Bangalter, and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (Daft Punk).
But that is just my taste in music.
