my theory was that if naruto has lost rikudous chakra then sasuke should be left with a tomoeless rinnegan, having lost half of his yin

i care, the entire series for me was about how much progress they would make

at the end, we were all so glad how strong they became

Not at all. They're still Gods among men, have the greatest feats and they were bound to get weaker anyways (at least when they get old). Honestly, neither of them were fighting at 100% in that fight. It's always like that for every action manga when the new character is introduced.

We have to also take into consideration that they are rusty for the most valid of reasons (they made peace in the world).
