Loved the setting, it had one of the most unique premises in any Godzilla film to date. I loved the art direction, again it went hand in hand with the unique setting. I was concerned initially about it being 100% CGI as opposed to being a traditional anime film, but once it came out and I watched it I wasn't as distracted by the CGI as I worried I would be.

It was very slow, was almost entirely set up/build up and you could even make the argument that it was pretty uneventful - but I'm willing to overlook that as I knew going into the movie that it was Part 1 of a planned trilogy, so being mostly setup is acceptable provided that Part 2 is mostly action and Part 3 is mostly resolution. I will say, I'm still not sold on Godzilla's design. The use of CGI was able to make nearly everything in the film blend together in a non-distracting way, but Godzilla was one of the few things that everytime I saw him I was reminded that he was CG. So I wish they spent a little more time refining his design a bit. The characters were also pretty 1-dimensional, but again knowing that this is a trilogy I am willing to overlook the characters for now in hopes that the next 2 films give them a little more depth. Or at the very least give me any reason to care for them.

But, without getting into spoilers... dat ending tho. That mother f*cking ending got me so hyped. It was the definition of badass. And the fact that Part 2 and Part 3 are coming MUCH sooner that I anticipated makes me even more excited.
