How do I get the border, away from the Avatar itself? Like a little space between the two?

Uhm, I think you'd have to scale the image itself, not the border or canvas. You could try going to the layer with the image, scale the layer to be like a couple or several pixels smaller. Then keep the border as it is? Hm..
