This is done to prevent people going "That^" or other one word spam. Actually add some thought and detail into your posts.

Yes or No answers can always be extended in a certain way unless the question is impossible to extend.
If someone asks like the example you said "Are you in High School"
Then you can answer instead of the typical "Yes", you could put "Yes I am, why do you ask?"
