They are of kakashi his age and their teams battled it out in the chuunin exam.
Genma became a chunin at age 13.
Wiki says genma is 30 right now.
16 years back=14.
Minato died 16 years ago.

Genma was in minato his hokage guard squad, as a 14 year old (jounin?) and could do FTG together with the other guards.
So genma was 14, FTG user and bodyguard of the hokage...

Kishi should add a handful of years to kakashi his generation. Making them 35 today or so, that would make them 19, 16 years ago.
It makes it all fall better into place.

He screwed over the whole timeline with this chapter. I had thought Ibiki was a year or two older and Hayate was a year or two younger. Genma is really underrated however.
