Shadou steps forth on the training ground, patiently awaiting his senseis arrival. Today he would be learning the arts of Genjutsu, something that he had been looking forward to learning for a long time. Shadou grabs his cloak with his hands and pulls it over his head and then starts to stretch while he still had the free time.

Can't wait to meet my new sensei.

*While Shadou is stretching in a lazy fashion, he looks up to see the terrain has changed from the lush-green training field, to one covered in a thick layer of snow and ice. The sun was still brightly shinning and Shadou could not feel any cold from the snow. For this was nothing but a physical illusion.*

Greetings Shadou, I am Shinta and I will be your sensei. As you can see, the terrain has changed slightly but no worry, for that is only an illusion. A basic illusion at that, but still a useful one.
Before I release it, or if you know how please do so, tell me a little bit about genjutsu. What is it, what are the limitations of genjutsu and how can one 'defeat' a genjutsu?

What the hell is going on?

Shadou starts to observe the training area with a puzzled look on his face. He shrugged his shoulders and locked his eyes onto his newest sensei, who he figured had casted a genjutsu technique. “Try to get out huh” he thought to himself. Shadou grabbed a kunai from his utility belt and held it towards his chest. He shook his head and decided to remain under the genjutsu. Trying not to be thrown off by the sudden “change” of the environment, Shadou goes over his knowledge of genjutsu in his mind and then explains what he knows to his sensei.

Genjutsu which means illusion techniques is used similar to that of ninjutsu in that it requires chakara and hand seals. The difference being that genjutsu techniques are illusionary while the effects of ninjutsu attacks are real. Genjutsu techniques can manipulate the flow of chakara in an opponent’s brain thus causing a disruption in their senses.

Genjutsu can be used to create false images like you just did, or cause pain from trauma because the victim will believe that they are in pain. One can also be brainwashed by being fed illusive suggestions from some genjutsu techniques. When an opponent is placed under a genjutsu, they may appear to be unconscious or continue to move around depending on the genjutsu technique used. Because of genjutsu being capable to mess with one’s mind, a user can not only cause trauma to their opponent, but use the advantage in a battle by making their opponent think they’re in one spot when they’re really in another.

Genjutsu techniques cannot be performed by a novice because if they are performed incorrectly, they will not work. Only highly skilled ninja with precise chakra control and high intelligence should attempt to learn and use genjutsu techniques, which shouldn’t be a problem for me.

There are a few ways to counter a genjutsu. One can simply stop the flow of their chakra. Another way is through actual intense pain, which can bring the victim back to their senses. Us Uchihas who are able to use the sharingan can see through or break a genjutsu. Byakugan wielders are also capable of seeing through a genjutsu. A ninja can also use an obstructive technique to prevent being trapped in an ocular genjutsu.

Shadou stares at his sensei, waiting for his approval to Shadou’s knowledge of genjutsu.

How was that?

Shinta listened closely to his students words, after he breathed a sigh of relief that Shadou didn't stab himself in the chest.
That is a very detailed and accurate description. Well done. However, the way you 'almost' released yourself from the jutsu... that was a little drastic. For such a low level jutsu you need only to bite your finger in the same manner that you would if you were to summon an animal.
Shinta then takes out a kunai and twirls it around in his hand. I guess I should try to get you to perform the very genjutsu I performed for you. Shinta then throws the kunai, suddenly and without warning towards Shadou, making a clean cut across his left cheek, releasing him from the genjutsu. Now, your turn to perform one.
Shinta then takes out a scroll and tosses it to Shadou, the scroll reads:

( Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu ) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique

Focus your chakra and release it through the air, until it reaches me. Then direct the chakra through my eyes, using them as the access point to my brain, where you will cause me to see the candles change into glowing mushroom, much like I had you do.

After Shinta made his abrupt action with throwing the kunai, Shadou begins to observe the area , noticing the appearance of the training grounds has returned to normal. He raises his hand to his cheek that was grazed by the kunai while having a shocked look on his face. “I guess I was about to make it too extreme….just biting my finger huh” Shadou tells himself in his mind. He then listens carefully to his sensei’s instructions as he tossed the scroll.

Got it!

Shadou grabs the scroll from out the air, laying it on the ground and then crouching over so that he could go over it. He takes a few moments to go over the scroll, carefully reading every detail on how to accurately perform the technique. Once content with what he had learned , Shadou started to gather the pure chakra from within him. He releases his chakra, letting it become one with the air around him and his sensei. Within a few seconds, Shadou’s chakra had spread through the air and to his sensei. Shadou’s chakra forces it way through the corners of his sensei’s eyes, flowing through his retina where it would shortly arrived at his brain; where Shadou then focuses on casting a genjutsu technique that would feed his sensei a false image of surroundings.

Shadou looks up towards his sensei. If the technique had worked, he would be seeing the candles transform into glowing mushrooms. Shadou waits for his sensei’s reaction to his newly learned genjutsu technique, hoping that he performed it correctly.

After a moments pause, the candles slowly started to change into a glowing mushrooms until not a single candle was visible to Shinta's clouded eyes. He then cuts the tip of his right index finger on a shuriken in his tool pouch, realeasing him from the genjutsu.

Shadou... Excellent work, with time you'll be able to perform that much quicker. Be sure to conceal your illusion by either using a smoke bomb, flash bomb, or just some other method of making sure your opponent won't realise the change in terrain.

Shinta then tosses a new scroll to Shadou.
( Genjutsu: Kahen Tonsou ) - Illusion Technique: Flower Petal Escape
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.

This takes a little more time to set-up, requiring five hand seals. After you perform them your chakra will effect the opponent in a similar manner to the last jutsu, except your target will see you dissolve into a storm of flower petals. This will be the only thing your opponent will see, the flower petals that is, as they will block their vision, leaving you to escape or set up another jutsu.

Try it on me.

Got it!

Shadou grabs the new scroll that his sensei just tossed from out the air. A grin took over his face. For some reason, Shadou liked the idea of toying with people’s minds. Shadou unravels the scroll and observes it, remembering every detail needed to perform the technique correctly. Shadou channeled his inner chakra from within, allowing it to flow freely throughout his body. He drops the scroll as it lands by his feet. He then weaves together a few hand seals and followed up with the technique. A few moments passed by. Shadou still with a grin on his face turned his attention to his sensei that had a puzzled look on his face.

He's giving me a what are you doing look. I think I forgot a hand seal….oops. Let’s try this again.

Shadou looks down at the scroll and goes over it once again. Not disturbed from his mistake, Shadou gathers his chakra once again. This time he weaves together the correct five hand seals. He allows his chakra to release from his body as it flowed quickly towards his sensei. Shadou would then appear to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals if the technique was performed right.

As Shadou seemed to successfully perform the jutsu, on his second attempt, Shinta releases himself from the genjutsu in such a way that it would not be noticeable by Shadou; Shinta bit the inside of his cheek, drawing a small amount of blood and causing enough pain to release himself from the genjutsu. Only to see Shadou still standing where he was prior to casting the illusion.

So you intend to cast the genjutsu and just stand there? What are some things you could do while your target is busy with the genjutsu. Are there any combinations you can perform with this? I remember a wind jutsu that I think would work perfectly with this jutsu, though it might require a clone to assist you... if you have any knowledge in the wind element, perhaps you could refresh my memory?

Shadou raises his head, his eyes drifting off into the sky while he began to repeatedly tap his foot on the ground. He was going through the series of questions his sensei asked in his mind and was trying to put together the perfect answer. He laughed a little after hearing his sensei’s first question.

Well, I could’ve tried to attack you while you were under the genjutsu or set up traps, but I didn’t think that would be a wise decision.

Anyway, the last jutsu is mainly used for escaping a battle. I guess you could say while an opponent is busy being distracted by the genjutsu, the user has the opportunity to set up an attack to catch their opponent off guard. As for wind, I completed up to C rank techniques with another great sensei known as Crutch, but off the top of my head I cannot think of a specific technique that could go with this one; unless you’re thinking about the flower scattering dance technique which is similar to the genjutsu because it summons petals, but to attack the opponent, dealing physical damage. That technique doesn't necessarily need a clone though, so that can't be it. Perhaps if you happen to remember during our training, you could enlighten me on the wind technique to use with this one. Knowledge is a key in winning battles and every piece of information is important to me
.

Shadou lets off a smirk. He didn’t want to disappoint his sensei with his lack of knowledge regarding the technique. Even if his answers weren’t what his sensei expected to hear, he hoped that he would be able to tell that Shadou was at least trying. Shadou then let out a sigh while trying to read his sensei’s facial expressions to tell if he was pleased or disappointed.

Shinta kept an emotionless expression on his face, only letting out a short lived smirk when he heard Shadou's response to his first question.

That's exactly the jutsu I was talking about. You need a clone in order to channel the Flower Petal Dance, and to keep it active. The genjutsu you could use as a manner of concealing the Flower Petal Dance, if you understand that. Just be sure you are not to loud with your 'concealed' actions during the genjtusu as only your opponent's sight is affected during that genjutsu.

Shinta then tosses a new scroll towards his student, detailing the next jutsu.

( Genjutsu: Kasumi ) - Illusion Technique: Servant
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: 20
Description: The user does one handseal and throws a paper bomb at the enemy. The enemy, trapped in a genjutsu will see a clone of the user advancing upon him. As the paper bomb reaches the enemy, it explodes

This is another genjutsu that effects only your opponents sight. Use your chakra to cause me to see a clone running from your position, directly at me, when in fact you have simply thrown a kunai at me... you can leave the explosive tag off for this one...
The illusionary clone is simply to conceal your kunai while keeping my mind occupied on the fact you have a clone running at me.
After I counter it, tell me a few ways you can identify this is a genjutsu.

Shadou wipes some sweat from his forehead and lets out a sigh of relief upon hearing that his answer was correct.

I surely will use that combination in the future!

Shadou goes to catch the new scroll but missing it as it falls to the ground. He mumbles to himself “doh”, before picking the scroll back up. He then takes a few minutes to go over every detail required to perform the technique before trying it himself.

Let’s give it a go.

Shadou raises his hands so that they are in front of his chest and performs a single hand seal. While performing the hand seal, Shadou called forth his chakra and directed it towards his sensei. Once it reached his sensei, the chakra made its way to his brain, giving him a false imagination of an identical clone of Shadou, charging at him with full speed from the position Shadou currently stood. While his sensei was under the influence of the genjutsu technique, Shadou grabbed a kunai from his belt that didn’t have an explosive tag attached, and threw it directly towards his sensei’s chest.

His sensei shifted his body to the side, evading the kunai which came as no surprise to Shadou. The clone disappears and his sensei could see that the real Shadou hadn’t moved an inch. Shadou figured in his head that his sensei had quickly inflicted physical damage upon himself, escaping the genjutsu. Shadou smirks after seeing his sensei dodge the attack. He then proceeds to answer the question he was asked.

I guess there are a few ways an opponent could identify this technique. Since I have Uchiha blood flowing through my veins, I could easily identify this technique once I gain my sharingan, heh. Other than that, I’m not quite sure. The technique can only be done from a short range, so an opponent charging at you, or in this case a clone, should seem off, unless they’re a taijutsu specialist . Watching your opponent perform a hand seal and then follow up with no elemental technique could be a give off that they’re performing a genjutsu too.

I hope you realise for RP, you can't dictate how your opponent counters your move xD

*Shinta dodges as described above.*

To the next then I guess

*As he says this, Shinta causes Shadou to see several clones emerge from the ground and trees behind him, kunai drawn and looking like they are ready to attack as they slowly walk towards Shadou. There are five clones in all, each of which emerged mid-range from Shadou.*

This is similar to the previous jutsu, only it works a little better in that you don't have to be so close to your opponent! Unfortunately, like the previous, the clones are simply illusions and the caster of this genjutsu can still be seen. It's best to use this genjutsu whist you are in a hiding spot, where you can throw kunais and make it look like the illusionary clone threw it etc.

*After quickly rustling around in his bag, Shinta draws yet another scroll and tosses it to Shadou.*

Description: This illusion creates numerous illusionary clones of the user that appear to emerge from the ground, trees, rocks, etc. If these clones are attacked, they appear to multiply. The user can co-ordinate his attacks with the clones to make it appear as if they are real.

Now break the genjutsu and tell me how you'd deduce this as a genjutsu... other than waiting for your sensei to describe it to you.

I know, I was just going off your last statement “After I counter it, tell me a few ways you can identify this is a genjutsu.”. I didn’t know if you wanted me to save you some time and write your counter so I could go ahead and explain or if you wanted to just rp your counter and ask me the question again in which I would have to explain in my next reply(which would've been this one)…thought I save you some time. I won’t do it again tho :p

Upon seeing several clones of his sensei appear from various locations of the training ground, Shadou takes a step back with his left foot and raises his arms by his chest with his fist balled up. He quickly glances at each of the five clones as they slowly approach him .

Time to use my sharingan!!!! ….no, no that would be cheap.

As his sensei tosses the new scroll towards him, Shadou quickly thrust his arm out and snatches the scroll from out the air. He withdraws a kunai from his pouch around his waist and uses it to make a slight slice on his left forearm, inflicting just enough pain upon himself to break him out of the genjutsu. The clones vanish as Shadou glances over towards his sensei, and then brings his attention back to the scroll. Once done going over the details of the technique, Shadou drops the scroll by his left foot and looks up towards his sensei.

How to deduce this as a genjutsu? Well, if the target of this genjutsu has his attention on the user of the technique, he will easily be able to pinpoint the actual target. Seeing clones emerge from trees and rocks is also a dead give off. Because the clones appear to multiply when they are attacked, the victim of this genjutsu should be easily to recognize that he is under an illusion.

I still could have countered and moved the thread at the same pace :T_T:

Anyway...

Shinta ponders for a moment, finding a fault in Shadou's reasoning...
What if I had a real clone emerge from the ground, one that had used Underground Fish Projection which allows me to merge with the ground? Would you simply dismiss it and think it's a genjutsu, leaving you open to attack? Just to be safe, throw some of those handy Kunai or Shuriken at them... if they seem to reform from a black sludge... they are most likely a gen.
Attack first and question during you attack, you don't have time to question, hesitate and then attack.

A short time passes as it seems Shinta is mulling something over in his head.

If you have an awakened Sharingan, please activate it to dispel the next genjutsu. I want to see how adept you are at doing that...
Now, divert your attention to the second jutsu on the scroll I gave you earlier.

( Magen: Narakumi ) - Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user performs two handseals causing it to appear as if a swirl of leaves surrounds the opponent. The swirl eventually falls away, and after a few seconds, the opponent sees the image of whatever they fear the most, shocking them and potentially causing them to faint.

This one is a little tricky as it not only just effects your targets mind, but it requires you to attack the memories of your target, digging up something they would rather not remember... something that terrifies them.

As Shinta is speaking, he performs two swift hand seals, making it appear as it a whirlwind of leaves surrounds Shadou, blocking his vision momentarily. As the leaves fall away, his most terrifying memory appears, this will cause him to pass out unless he can break free in a short time.

Break free as quickly as possible using your sharingan, then tell me how you could deduce this is a genjutsu if you didn't have your Sharingan active.

Attack first, ask questions during the attack….got it.

After his sensei went over further details of deducing the previous technique as an illusion, Shadou bent over to grab the scroll that laid by his foot. A few moments pass as Shadou carefully reads through the details of the second jutsu listed on the scroll. After remembering every detail in order to perform the technique, Shadou once again drops the scroll by his foot.

When Shadou raised his head back up, he notices what seemed to be a whirlwind of leaves surround him. Shadou smirks and closes his eyes. He quickly opens them back up, revealing that his black eyes had switched into that of a crimson red color with black pupils that a single black tomoe centered around.

Type: Supplementary
Rank: A-Rank
Range: Short-Long
Chakra: 30 (-10 per turn to keep active)
Damage: N/A
Description:
One of the Three Great Dōjutsu (San Daidōjutsu), the Sharingan is the kekkei genkai of the Uchiha clan. Unlike the other Dōjutsu, not all members of the Uchiha Clan possess the Sharingan. This great Dōjutsu seems to awaken only on exceptional Uchiha members and only in times of great stress. Once awaken, the pupil turns red and a single tomoe (巴) seal appears around the center pupil. As the user masters and evolves their eyes, the tomoe (巴) seals increase, topping 3 per eye. The main ability of the Sharingan, like any other Dōjutsu, is to enable the user to see the flow of chakra. This ability is further improved as the Sharingan gives color to chakra, enabling the user to differentiate chakras from different people or from different sources. Although the user can see chakra through matter, he cannot see beyond dense matter or in long distances. Coupled with the ability to see chakra, Sharingan users gain acess to an incredible clarity of perception that enables them to read insanely fast movements or minor details, enabling them the ability to foresee in an easier way, traps, incoming attacks, etc. This clarity of perception is so great that a Sharingan user can sometimes start performing a counter to an attack that is still being performed, enabling the counter to be launched only a split a second after the attack. This clarity of perception leaves Sharingan users able to track high speed movement easily as well as to read through handseals. This last ability enables them to learn techniques much faster and sometimes copy them directly from the enemy, as long as the user has the necessary chakra affinities and requirements to perform it. Finally, the Sharingan is often linked to Genjutsu and mind-manipulating illusions, mostly because the user can, mostly through Eye Contact, directly and precisely use his chakra to manipulate the enemy's chakra flow. In return, the users clarity of perception gives him the ability to more easily decipher visual illusions cast upon him and see past them. The Sharingan has a great cost to the user though. The chakra consumption disables its use for long periods of time and, even when the user grows stronger, it's still hard to keep it active for long periods of time.

Note: The user, if he hasn't gained full mastery over his Sharingan, will need to spend a move to activate it, although as long as he has chakra and enough stamina he'll be able to keep it active until the end of the match. If the user is Sannin Rank or above and has gained his 3 Tomoe Sharingan and held it for one month, he becomes able to passively activate it, meaning he'll no longer spend a move of his 3 per turn.
Note: To avoid direct Eye Contact and be able to focus only on the body movement below the chin, the opponent needs to have mastered Taijutsu to possess the necessary skill.
Note: Predicting the nature of a technique or what it exactly is requires the user to either know the technique or that its a cannon technique.
Note: Danzo and Kakashi bios activate the Sharingan by removing the covers in their respective eyes and suffer a +10 chakra consumption per turn penalty
Note: The user is bound by the abilities and limits of the stage of sharingan he possesses, stated in the rules of the KG.

Due to the incredible clarity of perception granted by his visual prowess, Shadou was easily able to see through this low ranked genjutsu technique performed by his sensei. The whirlwind of leaves vanished along with Shadou’s biggest fear….midgets. Shadou quickly shifted his eyes towards his sensei’s, his crimson red eyes met his.

No…I don’t know any sharingan genjutsu yet…don’t worry, heh.

How I could deduce this as a genjutsu, well I can’t think of too many ways but if you’re out in a desert or somewhere where there is no grass or trees, a whirlwind of leaves should come off as strange. If in a terrain with leaves, if the wind is not blowing, how would a whirlwind be created? Seeing your biggest fear should also tell you that you’re under an illusion if you don’t give in to it, unless you’re biggest fear is your opponent.

Very good, you seem to have the basic idea of deducing genjutsu. The main key is to look for flaws in the reality, as you pointed out you wouldn't expect a whirlwind of leaves in a desert.

After a moments pause, Shinta tosses a larger scroll over to Shadou, detailing the C-rank genjutsu.

Now deactivate your sharingan... it can't pierce through these illusions, but it can show you the disturbance in your chakra network... if you had been in a genjutsu that it... which I need to put you in one now...

( Genjutsu: Kai ) - Illusion Technique: Release
Rank: C-S
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 15-40
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user does one hand seal to focus and then proceeds to disturb his chakra flow by forcefully stopping it momentarily and then "spiking" his spiritual energy, unbalancing his chakra. This dispels any genjutsu set upon the user except MS Eye Techniques, Paralysis-like Genjutsu and Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant. The effectiveness of this technique is dependent upon the skill of the user. A Jounin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to C-rank. An S-class ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to B-rank. A Sannin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to A-rank. A Sage rank user can dispel Genjutsu up to S-Rank. The user may use this technique through physical contact on others to dispel them from Genjutsu. The technique can only be used once per turn and the user still needs to fully follow the logic as to why he figured out it was an illusion.

Study the Kai technique carefully, 'cause I'm going to get you to try it soon. The key is to hold the Ram hand seal and focus on sharply spiking your chakra. You'll need to first stop your chakra flow and then surge it as forcefully as you can. Similar to when you crimp the end of a hose, the pressure build quite rapidly until your release the hose, causing the built up water to burst out before returning to its usual flow.

*Shinta then puts you under the same illusion as before, causing you to see leave swirl around you to block your vision, before revealing your biggest fear before you.*

Try the Kai now...

The crimson red eyes of Shadous sharingan changed back to their original color due to his sensei’s command to deactivate it. As soon as he deactivated his sharingan, his sensei tossed him another scroll in which Shadou caught with both of his hands. The scroll tossed at him pushed him back a few inches, it was larger than the other scrolls he was given. Shadou took the time to carefully read over the details for the next technique while his sensei explained how to correctly perform it. In the corner of his eyes he could see a whirldwind of leaves start to form in front of him.

Not this again…

Quickly reacting to the genjutsu casted by his sensei, Shadou drops the scroll and raises his hands in front of his chest and weaves together the hand seal of the ram. His eyes closed as he entered a state of concentration, going over the details from the scroll and the advice given from his sensei. The chakra flowing throughout his body suddenly came to a halt due to Shadou forcefully stopping it. Shadou took a deep inhale as drops of sweat came flowing forehead. He let out a slight grunt as he managed to forcefully surge the flow of his chakra, unbalancing it and releasing him from the genjutsu. He slowly opened his eyes and took a deep breath and then nodded his head at his sensei, noticing the whirlwind of leaves had disappeared.

I think I got it!

Shinta let out a small chuckle at Shadou's excitement upon his release from the Genjutsu.

Not done yet!

Shinta then creates a clone that draws it's sword and then starts to run at Shadou, waving the sword as he does so. This causes Shadou to see multiple waving arms that serve to confuse Shodou's sight, leaving him unable to effectively counter the sword slash.

Description: The user waves their sword back and forth, which when seen by the target locks them in a genjutsu which causes them to hallucinate multiple waving arms. The movement resembles that of a willow tree blowing in the wind. With the enemy off guard, the user is free to cut them down.

OOC: Just going to test you on a few Kai releases for another post or two. Identify this as a gen and then perform the Kai jutsu. My clone is not an illusion so you'll have to counter his sword slash as well.

What, is this?

Shadou watches as his sensei creates a clone. He notices the sword in the clones hand and reaches down to grab onto the hilt of his katana to prepare for a defense. The clone started to rush at Shadou while waving a sword. Shaodou drew his attention to the sword and the constant waving of the arms that the clone was doing. The sword wielded by the clone then suddenly turned into multiple waving arms. Caught by surprise, Shadou takes a step back to observe the situation.

Multiple arms appearing out of nowhere, this isn’t right, and what happened to the sword? This has to be an illusion. For a second, I though sensei was just rushing in to stab me but the sword turning into multiple arms is a giveaway.

Having little time to react, Shadou released his grip on the hilt of the sword and held his hands in front of him while weaving together and holding the ram hand seal. Using the previous technique he had learned, Shadou forcefully stops the flow of his chakra. Once his chakra completely stops flowing throughout his body, Shadou surges it again, causing it to flow again at an unbalanced rate, releasing him from any genjutsu.

The multiple arms vanished and the sword wielded by the clone could once again be spotted. By now the clone was preparing to swing his sword at Shadou. Shadou quickly reached down to draw his sword out of his sheath, swinging the katana in front of him to meet the clone’s sword. The loud clashing of the blades could be heard throughout the area.

That was too close, almost didn’t react in time.
