That's not bypassing that's following the rules. Kai is only one method of breaking genjutsu; pain, external chakra infusion, and full-body surge are the others. If you didn't have kai and, you don't have a comrade/partner or one of the advanced versions that allot for external chakra infusion then you have two ways of breaking S-rank genjutsu; high enough inflicted pain or F-ranked body surge.
Of course, even if you are a sage, if you are hit with a paralysis genjutsu and do not already have your hands positioned in a hand seal, you cannot perform kai. Genjutsu kai requires a hand seal. Though, generally; most lone genjutsu techniques will are breakable in some way. Some are just harder than most.
