Upon chance, Shisui decided that he would go on a journey to Amegakure. He had heard many things about the once impoverished city. Some good things and some bad but all in all it was steeped in mystery. On his way one day, he decided to stop at a local tavern and ease his worries by having a drink or two. He approached the counter and asked for a meal with drink but in the quietest place in the tavern. He was asked if he wanted to sit with all the rowdy men so he could share stories of his journey but he refused and was pointed to another place. Shisui was the type of man who never liked center stage in anything and enjoyed being in the shadows. He believed that was what a true shinobi should be....a shadow. While enjoying a fine meal and a good drink, Shisui happened to read a inscription on the table. Having an affinity for solving puzzles and mysteries, Shisui decoded the message a couple of minutes later. It was hard but he got it. The words read....

"An eye that sees, an ear that hears, the highest peak is writ with tears."

What he got from that message was that he had to go an find highest peak in the city. In order to do that he had to ask and find it himself. After doing some investigating, he finally found the building. Once he approached the highest place, there was a altar with a scroll that stood before a wide opening into the building. Shisui opened it and read its contents.

"Congratulations Wise One. Your intellect speaks well of you for solving this puzzle. You are worthy to learn the Sacred Illusionary Arts, Genjutsu. Enter within and meet your Doom Instruction."

Shisui entered within with great caution. As he approached closer, a sign lay hung up high...

"Amekage"

Shisui's eyes widened and he could feel a little terror inside him. Although he was ready, his body language gave away his feelings of fear. He walked closer yet to enter a empty room with many dim candles and some strange music playing in the background. He stood there and waited. He called out with a slight tremble in his voice....

"Hello. Anybody there?"

Shinta, upon wandering around the tallest tower, noticed someone left the door open to a previously unused room of the city. Deciding to investigate, he stealthily walked into the room, sneaking up upon a stranger who he did not recognise. Deciding he posed little harm, Shinta tapped him on the shoulder as he spoke to the stranger. Hey... umm... Who are you and why have you set up all these candles?
Shinta's question was of the utmost sincerity, not realising that his villagers sometimes liked to stage elaborate ruses for him to deal with.

Turning around at the sound of the voice, Shisui felt a cold feeling run down his back and gasped in horror.

"Ahhhh!"

Shin jumped back in fear and looked at the man who had crept behind him. He looked on with assertive eyes fixated on the man's demeanor. He looked to be quite humble and not an air of arrogance in his voice. Shisui gave a sigh of relief when he figured out that this might be the teacher he was told to seek.

"My apologies. My name is Shisui and I am here to learn from you. I had heard you were a master of the Illusionary Arts. May you share your knowledge with me. (looks down) And these candles...they weren't mine but I like their fragrance. It reminds me of home."

Shin realizes he had been a little informal and decides to show some respect.

"Ahem, may I bother you for your name per chance?"

The strangers gasp made Shinta's eyes pop open from the mild shock, before he quickly settled down to hear what he had to say.
Shisui... hmm, it's a pleasure to meet you and to be your teacher. My name is Shinta and as you already know, I shall be opening your mind to the vastness of genjutsu... Shinta paused for a brief moment as he cleared his throat. Well I'll at least try anyway.

Shinta then steps towards Shisui, gesturing at the candles that seemingly start to transform into glowing Mushrooms. Only there appearance changes, the scent of the candles still carries strong through the room, being concentrated even more since the door to the hall closed.
As you can see, Genjutsu can be used to alter what a person sees, adding a nice ambient setting to the environment, or concealing a particular aspect of the terrain. Shinta then gestures to the closes 'mushroom' to Shisui. Go on, touch the bell of that mushroom. As you do so, tell me what you already know of genjutsu?

Seeing the candles suddenly change to mushrooms, Shisui became amazed. He could still smell the incense of the candles. He closes his eyes and takes another whiff.

"Ahhh smells nice."

He then crouches down near a mushroom and as his hand nears he feels a stinging sensation. He answered in a shocked manner.

"This is weird. First time I see or feel a mushroom burn my hand."

As he continues playing with it he answers Shinta-sensei's question.

"Well from what I learned, Genjutsu is basically the Illusionary Arts in which you use your chakra to alter their senses to achieve a desired effect. It can range from small effects like these mushrooms you created here to even Jounin Level ones. I have heard my people, the Uchiha, are especially masters of this art. Though some of the more powerful ones come at a price. My father once told me about one, though he wasn't sure if it was a genjutsu or a sharingan technique, it was called Izanagi. In which you turn your reality into a dream. I have heard of another one from Shodaime Hokage, the Bringer of Darkness Technique.

But anyways, you basically use your chakra to disrupt their chakra circulatory network to confuse them. With the exception of a few, Genjutsu in itself doesn't do any damage since it is just playing with your opponent's senses. I have heard of many masters in my time regarding Genjutsu. Their names were Isabella, Galen, Melanie, and Naraku (Reborn). I came here because I want to surpass them one day and for that I am willing to ask for help.

Sorry to bore you Sensei. I get carried away sometimes."

It seems as though you know the basic concepts of genjutsu, so lets see you try one one me. If you fail, it is evident you will have to be taught more about this art. I suggest you also forget about Izanagi for it is a forbidden Uchiha Genjutsu that is not to be trifled with.

*Throwing a shuriken at Shisui's cheek to cause a small cut, Shisui finds himself released from the genjutsu.*

For such a low rank jutsu, that's all the damage you need to disrupt your physical and spirtual balance, therefore releasing you from the jutsu... Now try your best to place me in a genjutsu; conceal these candles from my sight be concealing them in a similar manner that I did to you.
Do this by transmitting your chakra through the air, maybe hold a seal since this is the first time you've tried this.

( Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu ) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique

Having heard his words, Shisui then proceeds to do the genjutsu all the while a song plays in his head as he begins.

Shisui, using a half Seal of Confrontation, he closes his eyes and focuses on his chakra and begins to channel it to his eyes. He opens his eyes and looks at Shinta-sensei in the eyes and focuses on his Shingan (Mind's Eye). He begins to slowly infuse his chakra into it focusing on the subtle effect of his surroundings. He wants a smooth transition so as not to startle Shinta of his surroundings. He wanted this to be perfect so he begins to talk to him in the process to distract him so the effects are unnoticed.

"Shinta-sensei it is a known fact Genjutsu on its own is a powerful tool. However when you combine it with stealth and strategy it becomes almost impossible to detect unless you are blessed with good detection skills. Any genjutsu, even this simple one, can be broken if you allow your opponent a window of opportunity. But by keeping focused and distracting him or her you can effectively gain the upper hand. If your enemy remains oblivious to what is going on then you gain another opportunity to layer on another illusion. If I remember correctly, it must be done in a specific order lest you cancel the previous ones effect."

Hopefully without noticing, Shisui hoped that Shinta did not pay attention to the subtle change of the candles into mushrooms. While keeping him distracted as well, Shisui had managed to make the mushroom grow a bit in size but not too much or else this would have gone worse. Shin then answers in a rather apologetic tone.

"I hope I didn't go overboard with you sensei. I am still new at this after all."

As Shinta listens to his students words, he notes the candles altering, ever so slowly. Before long, the jutsu had been set and Shisui seemed confident he pulled of the jutsu without Shinta noticing.

Haha, very clever trick, however in combat your words won't be enough to fool your opponent.

Shinta then bites his lip, drawing a small amount of blood and releasing him of the genjutsu's effects.

Now, how could you use that to benefit yourself in battle? What's the best way to make sure you are not caught in such a genjutsu?

"You mean biting your lip, sensei? From what I know pain can disrupt your chakra flow and get you out of genjutsu but that won't help you against the sharingan. There is also the Kai technique which would be better than damaging yourself but that itself carries its own restrictions and still won't help you against a skilled sharingan user. You could try surging yourself with your energy to disrupt the genjutsu you are in like Chidori Nagashi (name?). Despite all that I wonder how you would get out of MS-Type genjutsu?"

Shisui scratches his head thinking about that and awaits Shinta-sama's reply with eagerness.

OOC: I don't know if Added Weight Technique (A-Rank or S-Rank) will do as well since I don't know if the restrictions were changed.

MS Sharingan genjutsu, I rather don't know to be honest since I've never come up against it.

*Shinta then tosses you a scroll, detailing the remaining jutsu in the D-ranks*

Direct your attention to Flower Petal Escape. Note how this, and the rest are simple illusions that effect your targets vision. Since they tell you how to cast the genjutsu, I want you to discuss with me how you'd discern that they had been cast on you, starting with Flower Petal Escape.

( Genjutsu: Kahen Tonsou ) - Illusion Technique: Flower Petal Escape
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.

OOC: I actually have never come across MS Sharingan Gen so I don't know if there are any different ways or restrictions on how to break it.
As for the Added weight Techs, I don't believe they are genjutsu counters any more. There is an S-rank Earth Armour where you grow rocks over your skin, as long as you cover your entire body, it will release you from up to A-rank gen.

Shisui catches the scroll with his right hand and with the help of the left one, he opens it and begins reading as he hears Shinta. He recognizes the genjutsu because he had heard about it when he had visited Konoha.

"Well the first thing is recognizing you are in a genjutsu. I would first make note of the terrain and how it ties with the sakura petals. Pink petals are from plants (flowers) that are on the ground unless we are talking about Sakura Leaves form a tree. If the place is nothing but grass and trees with green leaves then seeing several petals appear from nowhere would suggest that it is a trick. I doubt anyone is willing to carry sakura petals with them so only other thing is that they are a mask or illusion to confuse you. The enemy probably doesn't feel he can attack me head on so genjutsu would be his only other option because it keeps the opponent away from any confrontation."

OOC: Most people don't really think on terrain so keeping that in mind and using logic one can easily deduce that sakura petals don't just appear out of nowhere. But I wonder exactly though how one can tell other than the obvious when one is in a genjutsu.

OOC: You can always try and fail and blowing away the flower petals. For most genjutsu it is just a matter of finding the flaw in the reality of the jutsu. eg; would flower petals be present in a desert, would a tree grow behind me and trap me in an in it's branches etc.

Take a look at the next two jutsu.

( Genjutsu: Kasumi ) - Illusion Technique: Servant
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: 20
Description: The user does one handseal and throws a paper bomb at the enemy. The enemy, trapped in a genjutsu will see a clone of the user advancing upon him. As the paper bomb reaches the enemy, it explodes

( Kasumi Jūsha no Jutsu ) - Mist Servant Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost:10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: This illusion creates numerous illusionary clones of the user that appear to emerge from the ground, trees, rocks, etc. If these clones are attacked, they appear to multiply. The user can co-ordinate his attacks with the clones to make it appear as if they are real.

Both rely on taking your opponents vision under your control, to make them see either one, or several clones. The first jutsu requires you to perform one hand seal before throwing an explosive tagged kunai. This kunai will look like a clone running towards them, from the opponents perspective of course.
The second jutsu, requires no seals and has a greater range. You'll make it look as though several clones appear around the opponent, emerging from the ground, trees, rocks, walls etc and moving to attack the target. You'll have to do some work such as throwing ninja tools to make it look like the clones are real.

However, for both of these jutsu, you as the user are still visable.

Try one on me and then explain how you might deduce both of these are an illusion?

Starting from mid-range, Shisui begins to run towards the enemy. As he approaches the enemy, Shisui does a handseal and says, "Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!" However, he tricks the enemy into thinking that a shadow clone was summoned before him. Shisui then grabs a paper bomb from his pouch and throws it towards the enemy. Coordinating with the clone's kick, Shisui throw a paper bomb and as it nears the opponent he triggers it to explode to catch him offguard.

"Well to deduce both is kind of hard unless you have a doujutsu. First thing to do is pay attention to details in your surroundings such as the sound of the footsteps, foot prints (is there marks or pressed ground?), and the poof sound of when clones appear. You have to think fast otherwise you will end up taking damage."

Excellent indeed. You also make a very good point, most genjutsu can be deduced so long as you pay careful mind to the surroundings. This may be a natural character trait or something you consciously have to do in each battle.

OOC: i.e. State in your bio's personality that they are one to always pay mind to their surroundings or just post a line in each battle response stating that they continue to pay mind to their surroundings.

Now for the final D-rank on that scroll. Read it carefully and try it out on me. You're goal is to do two things, use your chakra to cause me to see the swirling leaves while more chakra probes my mind to find a fear of mine. Something that you can cause me to see as the leaves fall away.

The one thing I know from genjutsu is, performing it is overrated, okay not SOOOO much but for these simple genjutsus we don't linger in that, we stick to what I do best and that is battle, Get it? Got it? Good. z.z Besides I don't like having my students go through that misery. So lets get this started? Simply for me deduce this genjutsu, as well as tell me how you might use it?

Wow, so pretty simple, two hand seals, leaves appear around and surround opponent. The leaves fall down after a few seconds, and what appears ahead of the opponent their greatest fear which induces some nice effects.

Personally, this technique gives it off as a potential great, but is very vague lol. I mean what does a person fear the most? Object, events, people, etc? Lol but that isn't the point for this is an adaptable genjutsu and the answer of what they see is specific to what the user allows them to fear the most. Anyway, I see some dead give aways for detecting this genjutsu. Care to explain some? I notice the type of character you use this on also matters, I mean not many people would be able to make a proper genjutsu like this effect the likes of a Madara bio, feel me? So be wary on who you use this. Also, combination is obvious, this is meant to distract them, but what type of terrain do you think this technique is best used on?

That seems sort of metagaming to be able to think up what the person most fears. Now if you used it to show an enemy how he would look in certain situations like torture or death, then maybe it would work out. If you know the person (the bio), then it's even more helpful. Well the obvious one is the leaves and the second would be what you see. If you see yourself in some kind of situation, logically it would be easier to detect since you know you are the one viewing it. Yes some people/bios aren't easily intimidated on this type of genjutsu since they either have experience or their mental faculties are much stronger. Would this type of genjutsu be more or less useless against those who specialize in the field? This genjutsu would be best used in conjunction with a terrain where there is an abundance of leaves or in a forest environment. The lucky thing about this is it doesn't mention what type of leaves. That makes it exploitable since you can suit the leaves to some particular plant life. In fact if you are smart, you can also make a custom to set up for this and even the most trained opponents can fall to something simple as this. ;3

Side note: I laughed when I saw Kakashi use this on Sakura.

Yeah I would say stuff like this would be too easy for experts to deduce.

Description: The user casts an illusion where the opponent sees a huge ball of fire descending from the sky and enveloping its target.

Do I really have to explain this to you Devi ~_~ The user sends a fireball from above to crash down onto the opponent. Ways of deducing and combos please? We won't spend time on this.

( Genjutsu: Jinmon ) - Illusion Technique: Interrogation
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost:15
Damage Points:30
Description: The user of this technique, upon casting on a stationary opponent with physical contact with them, is able to convince the enemy to give away information. However, this will only work on ninja two ranks lower and below than the caster.

You set a genjutsu on someone through physical contact you can interrogate and retrieve information. First way to counter? Make sure you are not of low ranks! But try not to be stagnate in mobility, as well as let the opponent come close. This is very obvious, don't need to tell me counters, but tell me some usages you might have for this? NW it can be a great tool.

Well for those who aren't paying attention, this could catch them off guard and give you an advantage if they stupidly reply to it as if it was an actual fireball. But for the smarter folks, the one thing you can deduce is the temperature. This genjutsu in particular seems to work on your vision and probably a little on your hearing. The only thing is if you don't feel it gradually get hotter then obviously it isn't real. Even more so depending on the terrain. If it was cold or windy weather, obviously it wouldn't have the same effect if done in the hot desert. If used with an actual fire technique, one could produce the heat but the attack would be entirely different and unexpected. If I remmeber there is a fire jutsu that produces a strong heat that you could use in conjunction with this. Mix that up with other jutsu or weapons and you can really do some damage despite being a C-Rank genjutsu. It's all in how you use the jutsu rather than how strong of an illusion it is. Although if you have sharingan and have trained it up well, you'll be able to see through the illusion.

This might be good to use after a battle in where your enemy is subdued provided you didn't kill him or knock him out completely unconscious. As for the NW...hmm...this reminds me of that jutsu Sasuke used on Zetsu to tell him about the war when he had escaped after getting his EMS. Anyways, other usages would be using a binding technique to ensure your target won't move. You can use clones to help you subdue them easier and then go and cast the genjutsu.

!

You could use that technique Naruto and Sasuke used on Zabuza and use it as a medium to get close to the enemy. Then use the genjutsu and bam!

You could use the water drowning technique on your enemy and then wait for him to be semi conscious, then cast the genjutsu on him after you release him from it. (Would work if you could make a CJ of it instead).

That's the only one's I can think of at this moment. Sorry sensei.

Nah that is fine, it is a simplistic genjutsu, no need for serious dissecting lol

Re: Genjutsu!!!

Yeah that is the gist of it xD. Very basic, though personally I like to consider using this in a cosmetic way lol. Also genjutsu layering is nice with this, but it should coincide properly for full advantage. But yeah, easy to notice and counter.

( Genjutsu: Kasumi no Jutsu ) - Illusion Technique: Mist Technique
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra cost: 15
Damage points: N/A
Description: The user creates an illusionary clone that charges towards the enemy, jumps, then explodes in a cloud of cherry blossom petals which results in confusing the opponent and obscuring their vision, leaving them open for attack.

Make a clone which jumps and explodes close to the opponent into blossoms. The blossoms will confuse and harm their vision for a nano second for you to attack right after. Performance is easy, I want you to give me counters, and I think we already spoke about being able to counter intangible clones? Just to be safe give me a run down on how to counter this. Also, the quicker the counter the better, so focus on the clone to deduce the genjutsu before it even has a chance to explode.

( Kori Shinchū no Jutsu ) - Sly Mind Affect Technique
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost:15
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion on the opponent that makes them believe they are travelling in a straight line, when instead they are moving in circles. This is only effective on moving opponents. If the opponent travels in the circle for hours, they will be exhausted.

How do you think this jutsu stacks with combinations? What would you use? Personally I despite it takes hours for the exhaustion to take place, its not like the opponent won't realize its a genjutsu by then xD. But this has specific issues and can be used against specific people. Also, what is a key to countering this?

This Link has more extensive explanation for this jutsu I had with another student you might find helpful.

Well to counter before it even reaches you need to pay attention. If you pay attention to the ground (his trail; how is his running affecting the terrain?) and his sounds (do you hear him running? Does he make the same sounds when compared to yourself? How does he respond to your attacks if you were to throw him one?) you should be able to quickly deduce the situation. As an RP, we have the advantage of knowing it's a genjutsu by seeing the reply so coming up with a counter will come easy but will heavily reply on your writing and observational skills.

As for specific counters, I would use a more solid technique. That way if he were to go through it, then it would be quite obvious for me to deduce that he wasn't real. I would then work on thinking on why he isn't real. A deceptive technique always has a weakness if not used properly. I would try to use a more omni-directional technique so that way I don't get blindsided. The other obvious thing other than that is the petals but by then you would already be at a disadvantage. Lightning would work well for close combat if you decide to exploit the petals and attack the enemy.

Just from reading the jutsu description my mind is spinning. @__@

I hate this technique. z.z

Anyways, after a while this technique loses its wind for me because eventually your opponent will be able to deduce the jutsu. Combinations I would try to use with it would be running fire (the circle one; C-Rank I think) since it travels in a circle, it might be able to fool the opponent. A whirlwind/tornado jutsu would also be nice. In fact if you used a wind/fire combo it would really take advantage of the advantage you have. I could layer genjutsu with this but since I hate this one I'd rather not waste my time on it. Lol I wonder if this would work on people who have enhanced reflexes/speed like Weights/EIG. As for countering it myself...paying attention to my surroundings and how it affects me. I don't usually run during my battles (the few Ive been in) but if I do, I do pay attention and keep track of details and how I can exploit them. I kinda like to force my enemy to come to me. That and it gives me a high. xD
