[Discussion] Gender reassignment surgery

So in New York a mayor passed trans gender health care benefits to allow transgendered people to get gender reassignment surgery, which will be paid for by tax payers. So I'm not against transgendered people an any way, but I don't think that tax payers money should go towards a surgery for somebody who's confused about wether or not they want to be a man, or woman. There are more life threatening things that tax payers money should be focused on in medical terms.

I'm just hearing about this because two New York morning talk show radio hosts were fired for insulting transgendered people. This has caused a bit of an uproar. Do I believe In freedom of speech yes, but I also believe that an employer has a right to fire somebody who has decided to participate in their right to "freedom of speech" that actively insulted members of the transgender peoples. A fair example of why I believe this, would be of me telling one of the customers of the job I work at to go screw themselves, and then the boss saying, " well you have the right to say that, but it's rude so I'm going to fire you", there's not much of a difference there.

I know this is a strange optic to bring up on NB, but I would like to hear people's thoughts on this, and it often find people's opinions here, either very intellectual, or very entertaining, due to ignorance. Thoughts please.

Homosexuality I can understand and sympathize UNDER THE RIGHT CONDITIONS--but I don't agree with it or support it. But transgender surgery? Ugh...

That was exactly what I thought when I first heard about this. It's no different than a woman wanting breast implants. However people are trying to say being transgendered can be life threatening because it can be considered a mental disorder. They say transgendered people have a higher risk of suicide. So do military vets, but they get screwed often. One can just as easily say that a woman who feels insecure about the size of her breasts may suffer from depression because, of the anxiety that comes along with it,but they don't get a free ticket, so neither should transgendered people.

I support the LGBT community by the way. I'm in no way against them, but I work hard as hell, and I don't feel it's right that my tax money go towards something so minuscule to ones health.

Tax payers should not pay for this. Because taxes are there to help the benefit society at large such as infrastructure, education, defense, small business, food security, governance and so on. Spending on anything that does not do this is in my opinion unethical. Whither it is for religious organizations, non-profits, research and development via the private sector, or even political campaigns. Public funds used to benefit a single section of the population can not help all of us.

I don't think they're crazy, but I don't understand it either. They're just not comfortable with who they are, and they feel like they can do something to improve about the way they feel about themselves. We've all felt uncomfortable about something about ourselves at one point, and I can identify with them in that aspect. I feel very uncomfortable about my crooked teeth, but if there is no medical reason to get them straightened it's considered to be a cosmetic surgery, so like I said I stand firm in the belief that they shouldn't get a free gender reassignment surgery, if I can't get my teeth straightened.

Though I think I can for free because overcrowded teeth can be considered a medical problem, and also cause future problems in terms of dental hygiene.
