I just thought about something. Madara said he would die without the Mazo, right? Nagato awoke the Mazo during the 3rd war, same time Madara and Obito were in that...lair, right? What if when Nagato used the Mazo right after Yahiko's death, he accidentally killed Madara? Maybe that was the "signal" that made Tobi attack Konoha and seek out Nagato?

not een close the gedo mazo is not what he is hooked up to he is hooked up the the hashi tree so what he is hooked up to and the gedo mazo are 2 different things

Someone said that Mazo simply means 'statue'. So the statue that Madara was referring to may just be the Hashi statue/ root thing. I'm not really sure on your theory in that case, but when I first read the chapter I assumed it was the Gedo Mazo as well (although it looked fairly different).
