Is it possible that Gedo Mazo is a creation of Hashiramas DNA? Madaras whole hideout seems to be connected with Hashiramas powers; Obito, as well as Madara are sitting/lying on a bed/throne from trees and Madara is connected with something like branches with Gedo Mazo, which is sitting in a closed flower, where also Hashiramas face and the growing Zetsus are. In the current story we can also see the Gedo Mazo statue sitting on a flower when it isn't summoned, while Hashiramas DNA is existing in form of his face next to the statue. Another point is Gedo Mazos sealing technique. It is able to seal Bijus away and make use of their power - a part of Hashiramas strength which allows you to fully control Bijus; an ability the statue got equipped with when it was created with his powers. As we could see in the current chapter, Gedo Mazo should have existed before the Rinnegan were awaked or given next to Nagato. It seemed, that Gedo Mazo was in its growing phase when being inside the flower.

Further I remember Tobi saying that he wanted to synchronize the Gedo Mazo statue with Sasuke; but is this actually possible if the statue is supposed to be a summon of the Rinnegan? If this synchronization can be made between Sasuke and the statue, and Madara was also synchronized with the Gedo Mazo while not having the Rinnegan, in order to keep himself alive, Madara or Obito could've also synchronized the statue with Nagato, or further the Rinnegan.

Anything seem to be in connection with Hashirama, everyone is seeking for a part of his strength, anyone is talking about his powers to the sky and his influence extends to the present story. Maybe therefore Madara was seeking for a part of Hashiramas strength. Not in order to only become stronger or simply gain the wood release, but in order to be there where the current story is going on - The creation of the Gedo Mazo as a part of his plan and the Bijus which get sealed into it. Hashiramas DNA seems to be the key for anything.

Good theory but I think that Madara just uses Hashirama's mokuton as a funnel for the Gedo Mazo's chakra. I think those branches work much in the same way as the black rods of the Gedo Mazo. Madara just went about it in a different way than Nagato did. Madara's way also allowed him to survive for a much longer time than regular people. +rep

It's a good theory, but I don't think it explains why the it's called 'Demonic Statue of the Outer Path' - that directly implies it primarily has something to do with the Rinnegan.

Now when we see Gedo Mazo being inside of the flower and the Zetsus, which are consisting out of Hashiramas DNA, being produced by the Mazo, it is going to be more clear that the Gedo Mazo might be a creation of Hashirama or his power.
