its the same thing; the gedo is just bigger. Based on shukamaru's description of tayuya's ghosts, it suggests to me that the Gedo Mazo is a repository for the spiritual or mental chakras (not sure which, or if they're even distinct) of the juubi; its canon (I think) that the tailed beasts are the physical portion of that energy.
Now how the sharingan/rinnegan tie into it, I don't know yet.
