i think garp tried to take care of both him and luffy the best he could having to keep them a secret from the marines. so think he played a roll in ace's life. wb was able to show ace what he didnt know about his father and that you crew/ family will make you strong out on the ocean. thats why ace was after bb so badly. even disobeying wb. which you dont do to your captian

I'm going with Garp as well. Their relationship definitely runs deeper. Ace felt so much indebted to his mother who he never met for giving birth to him and Garp oversaw him being able to live safely from the WG although he himself was the hero of the Marines. WB comes close though.
