Alright, so me and a couple of other people on Skype were having a really thought provoking conversation. When it comes down to it, why are gangs here? Apparently because of society, things don't always work out in your conversation and you're put into tough situations which you want to take the easy way out, you know what I mean? Let's say you have a daughter, or a sister, or just a relative you're with, you're broke, no income, no other family that you can turn to, what's your solution? I mean, sure you can say you're going to try and get a job, and provide for your sibling, but how? You have no education, basically no identity, what then? Is it really their fault? Or, is it our fault as a society because we're not doing the best we can to ensure the success of the masses?

Well a lot of gangs were originally formed with the idea of protection. Take for example the Latin Kings. They originally formed to protect Latin immigrants from Irish immigrants. However despite their noble beginnings, new members with new ideals slowly warped the gang from a pseudo militia to the notorious gang you see now.

depends on the persons situation, some do it because of connections to make money out of need. others just like doing ignorant hood sh!t and banging.

a lot of times drug dealers need protection as well so they join a gang.

everybody chooses they life style.

school is not for everybody.

A lot of times it's not just about taking the easy way out. People that join gangs usually have issues that stem from abuse and neglect in their lives and childhoods, and gangs allow them an outlet for the aggression that would be caused by the prior. But, those issues probably stem from the same cause, which is really the society, and poverty mainly.

I do agree that it's usually because of situational problems (usually money or family oriented problems) that people turn to gangs, but like Okami said, what "gangs" used to be has been warped so much. It used to be about protection and now it's about making money through illegal means (like drug smuggling being a common gang pastime). People who get in to it have almost no way of getting through life in the conventional sense. Education is becoming increasingly more important and if you don't have the money you're not getting an education. Without an education you're not making money and without money you live in poverty and homelessness. I don't completely disagree with people turning to gangs, but I still can't agree with the heinous acts they commit. Too many innocent people die because of gang crossfire and a higher gang population usually messes up the economy of local areas and places like Detroit where it's really bad, it can affect an entire city. The Western world's capitalistic lifestyle has it's benefits but at it's core it breeds people who get into gangs because unless you come out of the womb into a stable family with a stable income you're already at a huge disadvantage and even things like environmental problems (parental upbringing, area you live) will affect your outlook on life and morph you. So all in all to reiterate, yes gangs are bad and their acts are heinous and horrible, but the society we live in is consistently breeding people who turn to them because the way it functions. More accessible and affordable education would go a long way in getting the people who want out of gangs, actually out of them and pave their own future.

A key component of gang life is the sense of security and family. Human beings are naturally a social creature, we've evolved as a species to survive in groups, our species is here because survival was made possible by groups. It's why we crave relationships, whether they be romantic, platonic, familial, etc. Lots of people who are in gangs may have dysfunctional families. It's stereotypical, but there's no question single parent families are common in the "hood" where gangs are likely to occur. Whether it be from death, deserting parents, splits, whatever the cause, it happens. So, gangs are kind of like a new family. A brotherhood that fills that gap. It's a place you feel like you belong in with people you belong with.

There's also the fact that kids are impressionable. They may see gangbangers and think they're cool, wanting to be like them. When exposed to the lifestyle early, they may think it's a lifestyle they want to pursue, to be a part of. They get immersed in it and that's what they know. There's also the fact that once you join a gang, you're chances of leaving alive are pretty small.

Both if I'm honest.

I do agree with a lot of this. However gangs tend to have allow people to leave if they get jumped out and thus go on good terms. However if you abandon your gang then yes, the chances of you leaving alive are small.

Back in the day...... Gangs was for the community or used to protect the community..... Now its a mockery, distasteful, shameful and shows a lack of respect. SMH

If I join the gang, I'll be in the Yakuza. Just saying.

LMAOO I almost died laughing. You know goddamn well ain't nobody who browse NarutoBase hard enough to join the Yakuza, much less any legitimate dangerous gang. We get pissy over a drawing not ****ing another particular drawing, and you expect anybody to believe anyone of us would be in one of the world's most infamous mafias? Get. Out. Of. Here.

There are plenty of other more legal ways to obtain income. Gangs are centered around drugs and violence, nothing good can come from joining a gang, the only thing you can expect is either jail time or a early death. I personally would never join a gang, no matter how desperate I am.
