Gamers and innovation, it doesn't always work.

Recently looked into this video on one of the channels I'm subscribed to and I have to say, I feel a bit awkward about it:

(Yes I can see it is a bit childish, but it does bring up some interesting points)
I'm one of those guys who enjoys their COD or Battlefield, but I also enjoy looking at the outliers in gaming, whether it be Minecraft, Portal, etc.

So, what do you think about the topic?

I already subscribed to game theory, they usually have great theories and there is another video to cover up which innovation works and how others fail.

I know, I just wanted to see other people's opinions on the matter. plus most would be turned off from watching three 8-12 minute videos back to back

I disagree with this, overall. Gamers do want innovation, but gamers, like all people, fear change. To introduce change, you have to use smaller, more gradual changes. Games like Assassin's Creed and Halo are updated and changed, though the core mechanics remain the same. Even Call of Duty, for as much as people hate it (and for as stale as it seems) does sometimes try to change its formula. We see those innovations coming in slowly, not all at once, because a lot of people just can't take THAT kind of change. It turns them off of a title.

Yet its not really reflected in the games that companies create and the overall sales of games. FPS is still the most talked about and mentioned genre in gaming and as the video states, many games have lost their originality and have become in many cases a shadow of their former self. Look at Resident Evil, it was once one of the best in the horror genre and now it gave up too much of its unique traits to become another action-oriented, mindless, third person shooter and in terms of horror it a fallen behind compared to other games such as daylight or silent hill.
