The lord of the rings and the accompanying lore beat game of thrones by a loooong way. Noone can or ever will match the history tolkein created for his books, Infact there are still thousands of pages of unpublished work he created for the back story of his world. Lord of the rings is the most well known thanks to the films, but is just a drop in the ocean that is the works of tolkein.

You cannot compare these two, Lord of the Rings is a classic tale that has influenced almost all fantasy works to this date.

George Martin even said that he was influenced by Lord of the Rings to write Game of Thrones, so technically there would be no "A song of ice and fire" books in the first place if Tolkien didn't write LotR.

Now if you watch the series or read the books of GoT you will notice a lot of it is based off of areas and factions in LotR. So that alone tells you that GoT can never trump LotR.

Currently GoT is the new hit in thing at the moment, so it's no wonder why everyone is in a GoT craze, I am too btw, I loving the series. But when this craze is over and eventually when you look back at history, LotR will always stand out among the rest. Why? Because Tolkien is the most influential writer in the fantasy genre and he opened the gate way for us to have other series like GoT.
