Same here. In fact, I'm willing to bet that Gai not dying was last second decision. I mean just look at his final moments: Major fight in which he uses his strongest techniques + multi-chapter flashbacks. That's pretty much how EVERY character sans Neji's asspulled death has been killed off in Naruto [Jiraiya, Itachi, Kisame, etc].
