We have seen no pictures of our favorite Gai Sensei and its probably because after 8th Gate his body is no longer suited to be a ninja. I got this email from a friend who knows a guy who knows a guy and said Gai will not be in The Last because Kishi "retired" him.

According to my friend Gai lives on the very outer parts of the Hidden Leaf where he is head of his own dojo with many pupils who aspire to be masters of taijutsu. Kakashi visits him every day and Gai has become quite famous, known through the shinobi world as the Leafs Mighty Green Beast.

I will ask him for more spoilers tomorrow!

Despite your source being absolute crap, it's logical to conclude that he's either dead or in a state not fit for strenuous activities such as being a ninja

Guy will never retire. Too badass. His body will heal from the gates damage. He was already saved by Narujesus. He just needs a good healer. And guess what.

Konoha has the best healers in the Narutoverse. NaruJesus, Tsunade, Sakura, Ino, Shizune and Tsunades boobs

Naruto revived gai and unlike the other gates after your finished your body is in extreme pain from bones to muscles but the 8th gate afterwards you die but he didn't because of naruto. The only way the most eager to fight shinobi stops being a shinobi is if kishi doesn't want gai to be the most powerful alive over naruto and sasuke since 8 gate is greater than them 1 vs 1

of course, opening the death gate means the risk of death and never be able to use your body properly again

unless naruto heals him

if he is forced to retire from active duty, he couldn't have picked a better opponent to sacrifice it against. That much is certain.
