Thanks to the raws, we can now clear up this fallacy.
Madara: "何?!空間がねじ曲がっただと?!”

Madara: "What?! He twisted the (air)space?
People have been ignoring the "the" in MP's translation and come to the conclusion that Gai is twisting space space, if you catch my drift.
When actually, he's been twisting the air and creating an immense amount of pressure using the enhanced physical power of the Gates, in a similar manner to Hirudora or Sekizou.
How this is clear?
The Japanese for space (the three dimensional one) is "宇宙" whereas this is "空間" which is an area-type of space.
