After using the 8th gate,he deserved to die and be remembered as a hero,but because of Naruto he is now enslaved by the infinite tsukuyomi and when the genjutsu is stopped he will have to live in pain for the rest of his life.

Seriously,even he wanted to die trying to protect the world.Naruto just provoked him more pain.
