You do realise Obito doens't have to conciously decide which parts of himself to make intangible. He turns on Intangibility, and Gai has wasted his life.

That's incorrect. If that was the case he would have demolished minato, but he has to decide to turn parts intangible. That's why he lost; it was a speed match. If it was automatic then there's absolutely no reason for him to have turned it off.

For clarification, Obito needs to be able to react to a person's speed to go intangible before they hit him, this allowed Minato to successfully land the rasengan, 8 gates gai would rip his head off before he reacts, also gai would hit madara like in manga until he's completely paper and Tobirama or any sealing unit seals him.
