If Gaara stayed the way he was in Part 1 a sinister menacing murderer I think he would join the Akatsuki .

Gaara would have been an Akatsuki member then we would have seen Gaara vs Naruto Shippuden style .

What other fate does Gaara have if he stayed evil?

No that's incorrect. Rinne Tensei kills it's User upon use health or no. Same happened to Obito. Madara's plan was to have Obito use it to revive himself knowing full well it would kill him. Obito knew this too which is why he never intended to use it on Madara from the start.

If you recall Chyo had a similar Jutsu she used on Gaara and it cost her, her life as well. It's a good balance for life giving Jutsu otherwise it would be like Dragonball and no one would ever really be dead because you could just revive someone back without any repercussions.

OT: many others are right. Gaara joining the Akatsuki would be suicide. The only way I could see this working is if Gaara was fully aware that they would take Shukaku from him and maybe believe in Pain's dream so much that he fanatically would give his life for it...but that sounds more like something Hidan would do than Gaara.

Rogue Ninja like the 6 tails would probably suit the bloodlust Gaara more than Akatsuki...which would honestly have been kind of badass.

I don't know why everyone is shooting the idea down.Jins were said to be full of hate for everyone and everything, so imagining a jin with so much hate that he'd want to kill all other jinchuuriki,even at the cost of his life, isn't too far fetched. In fact I think it would have been epic if like the 8th tail was a jinchuuriki and his last task was to bring down naruto! Talk no jutsu would have been in full swing in that fight but it would be boss! The emotional battle for both naruto and his opponent would be full of profound ideologies on how to deal with pain. I think it woulda been a great idea.
