Now, I realize Gaara is a very strong shinobi, I'm not disputing that. Being anywhere near or around sand typically gives him the advantage. However, I'm curious how much Gaara really relies on the sand in his gourd.

If he was stripped of his gourd, would he be anywhere near as powerful? I suppose he does have an Earth affinity so he might have some jutsu that could turn the surrounding earth into sand if it came to it. What do ya'll think? Would Gaara be anything special without sand?

Yes, Gaara is fine without his gourd. It's an aesthetic thing. He can create sand in any environment from the earth. The gourd simply provides a small amount of readily accessible sand that is pumped with his own chakra.

Well tbh, I don't think his mother would be able to protect him with his ultimate defense, so his gourd is like 90% of his power, its like Temari without her fan

yeah he could use sand from the ground but his gourd sand is infused with his own chakra so it costs less chakra for his techs and is faster. he would still be powerful but his ultimate defense wouldnt be as strong as it could be plus it would costs even more chakra for a weaker defense
