Gaaras sand is super fast and flexible plus Gaara can go airborne.

For gods sake Yamato got kidnapped without even putting up a fight.
At least Gaara put up a fight before being kidnapped by Deidara.
Yamato would not last so long against Deidara.
Yamato is getting farmed for his Mokuton as we speak.

Actually Yamato has plenty of defense for clay bombs. And Yamatos speed is 4.. Gaaras is 3..

Of course Yamato wouldn't go nearly as close in a fight against Deidara as Gaara did ,What long range attack does he have that can go against Deidara
But back to the topic in anime Shippuden Episode 186 showed that gaara's sand doesn't do that well against water.

The battle would really were the location is at because if it's towards a large body of water i'd have to go with yamato, If its a large body of sand like the desert i would go with gaara

Wow, Yamato is beast. I'm looking up his abilities now, and I think he takes Gaara with mid difficulty.

No yamato is one of my 3 top favorite characters and i can tell you he's not a beast the raikage is a beast, Kitsuchi is a beast,Gold & Silver brothers are beast but yamato is strong but not that strong come on now

yamato, he has an element advantage over gaara and can soak him in water before burying him alive
bad matchup for gaara since yamato can use water in addition to earth and obviously wood
