Feats speak for themselves. The shere speed and quantity of sand Gaara can unleash within a split second overwhelms Sasori.

His sand is fast enough (and strong enough) to take out Sasori's puppets, and effectively give him the upper hand.

The only lethal threat to Gaara in Sasori's arsenal, IMO, would be poison, but his Sand Armor counters the weapon-based ones, and to counter the ones that work by inhaling gas, he can always get out of range via his 'flying sand'.
