I'm not really all that sure but I'm under the impression that Amaterasu and it's variations is hotter than lava especially seeing as it never really fazed the Hachibi while amatersu would have killed him if Sasuke didn't stop it. (Could be wrong though)

Gaara is just a bad match-up for Roshi in my opinion.
